Fall Prevention for Seniors: What Medicare Covers

Falls are the leading cause of injury for seniors. Learn what Medicare covers for fall prevention and how to reduce your risk.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among Americans aged 65 and older. Each year, about 36 million falls are reported among older adults, resulting in more than 32,000 deaths and 3 million emergency department visits. The good news is that most falls are preventable, and Medicare covers several services and items that can help reduce your risk.

Fall Statistics for Seniors

The Numbers Are Sobering

One in four Americans 65 and older falls each year. Falls are the number one cause of hip fractures — and 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. After a hip fracture, only about 50% of seniors regain their previous level of mobility.

What Medicare Covers for Fall Prevention

Medicare Advantage Fall Prevention Benefits

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional fall prevention benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers. These may include:

  • Home safety modifications: Some plans cover grab bars, handrails, non-slip mats, and improved lighting
  • SilverSneakers or Renew Active: Free fitness programs with balance and strength classes
  • In-home safety assessments: Professional evaluation of your home for fall hazards
  • Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS): Medical alert devices (some plans cover these)
  • Transportation to medical appointments: Reduces fall risk associated with driving or walking to appointments
  • Bathroom safety equipment: Shower chairs, raised toilet seats, and bath benches

Fall Prevention Checklist for Your Home

  • Install grab bars in the bathroom near the toilet and in the shower/tub
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathroom, kitchen, and entryways
  • Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
  • Ensure adequate lighting throughout your home, especially on stairs
  • Install handrails on both sides of staircases
  • Keep walkways clear of clutter, cords, and obstacles
  • Wear supportive, non-slip footwear — avoid walking in socks on smooth floors
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach (no step stools needed)
  • Use nightlights in hallways and bathrooms for nighttime trips
  • Have your vision and hearing checked annually — both affect balance

Exercises That Reduce Fall Risk

Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent falls. Focus on these types of exercise:

  • Balance exercises: Tai chi, standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walking
  • Strength training: Leg presses, squats (with support), ankle weights, resistance bands
  • Flexibility: Gentle stretching, yoga for seniors
  • Walking: Regular walking on even surfaces improves overall stability

Free Exercise Programs

If your Medicare Advantage plan includes SilverSneakers or Renew Active, you have free access to gyms and classes specifically designed to improve balance and reduce fall risk. Many SilverSneakers classes focus on stability, strength, and flexibility — and they're taught by instructors trained to work with older adults.
